Pan-Pan review

Pan-Pan is an open world adventure game by Spelkraft based on puzzle-solving and exploration.

Your spaceship crash-lands on the whimsical planet and its fragments are scattered all around this bizarre sci-fi world. So you scrutinize the scopes of Pan-pan’s open world to find the parts of your jalopy to fix it and continue your journey home.

And be prepared to look in every nook and cranny to figure things out, as there is no guidance at all. The game certainly requires patience.

Graphics 5/5

The game is executed in full 3D with an isometric art style and looks gorgeous. Angled top-down camera perspective used in Pan-Pan allows seeing more on the screen at once. The color scheme is a perfect combination of soft pastels and vivid colors.

If you’ve ever played Monument Valley https://theappsdepot.com/games/puzzle/monument-valley, you’ll feel right at home here. Similar strange constructions and vibrant landscapes mixed with on-point small animation touches create unique immersive atmosphere. Animations are smooth and fluid.

Spectacular graphics are topped with soothing, captivating soundtrack composed by Simon Viklund.

Gameplay 5/5

You start off with bare hands in the middle of nowhere on a strange planet with zero guidance.
So you set off wandering around the area, unlocking more and more places of the world map as you go. There are no levels, the game offers a non-linear experience. So as you reveal new puzzles, seemingly unsolvable, you can leave them and come back later. The game is all about exploration, you’ll come across different non-playable characters and find necessary elements to help you solve the puzzles you’ve left behind. All in all, a lot of back and forth action is involved.

There is no speech in the game, no dialogues or prompts to check, so the whole experience can feel a bit esoteric. All the in-world hints are thrown through visuals and sound effects, and it can be rather challenging to interpret them right.

Some of the puzzles are logical and transparent, others are not. Several puzzles require lining colored blocks up in a particular order, but the matching system is impenetrable. As you have no obvious clues, it can be rather frustrating. So good old trial and error method is the key. Alternatively, you can peek at the walkthroughs: Pan-Pan is a mobile port of a PC version, so they already exist.

You have to rack your brain over the course of the game, but once you get the stick everything changes. Simple stick. Now you can thwack things, puzzles, NPCs, pretty much everything. And the gameplay facilitates at this point. You can solve your problems by hitting them and this adds to the fun part of the game.

The stick comes in handy in the puzzle with the bird. You have to place three eggs on the switches and stand on the fourth one to solve the puzzle. But the complication is that bird keeps taking her eggs back. The solution is simple - you knock out the bird with a stick and nothing stands in your way of stealing bird’s unborn children.

To save your progression, you have to find the save points and save the game manually.

There is also an option to save up to three games, so you and your family members can play the game on the same device.

Controls 5/5

Pan-Pan is a classic point-and-click adventure game, designed for touch screens.

The controls are smooth and intuitive. Just tap to move to the required spot. To pick up items or interact with objects tap on them. The markers above the objects indicate that you can interact with them.

Drag your finger across the screen to rotate the camera, pinch or use the magnifying glass option to zoom.

Replay Value 3/5

When you solve a whole bunch of puzzles, collect all the items in the random order and place them in the base, the game ends. The game currently includes 2-3 hours of engaging gameplay and you spend most of the time exploring the world map. If you decide to replay the game, you’ll probably do it in half an hour. So the replaying value is not too high. However, short gameplay doesn’t belittle all the Pan-Pan’s advantages. Monument Valley had the same issue, but that didn’t stand on its way to gain immense success.

In-app purchases

The game is completely free of any in-app purchases. It costs $3,99 and that’s all the money you’ll have to spend.

The bottom line

Pan-Pan is an interesting, a bit weird, yet engaging and compelling game. The gameplay is immersive, and the game itself is an eye candy due to the beautiful graphics. You will enjoy the time spent playing this open world puzzle adventure, so don’t hesitate and give Pan-Pan a try.
