Hidden City:Mystery of Shadows review
G5 Entertainment published one more hidden object free-to-play game called Hidden City: Mystery of Shadows. It offers a somewhat different hidden object experience from the typical. The game is entertaining but also dependent on your patience.
Speaking briefly, in Hidden City: Mystery of Shadows you have to save your friend trapped in a strange and unknown city. In this phantom place, witchcraft, magic, and science come together. Odd creatures walk around you. Imagination turns real. Read the full review to find out what else is waiting for you.
Hidden City: Mystery of Shadows has some strong points, and graphics is one of them. As for a free-to-play game, the visuals are excellent:
- the map is pretty detailed and looks gorgeous;
- the searching scenes are not too cluttered;
- the characters are charming;
- some personages wear extravagant costumes.
Plus, the sound becomes part of the atmosphere. It entertains and fits the mood ideally. You’ll also hear the voice overs in the expertly done cutscenes.
You play a young curious detective who wants to help his friend. The black smoke took the friend away and is not going to release him. At the same time, detective agency is just collecting some valuable information on this case. That’s why you enter the mystical city by yourself and start the search.
It’s not as easy as it may seem because the inhabitants and things have some weird abilities, and the black smoke looks alive. All of that fills your adventure with secrets, unique artifacts, and menaces.
Though the base story is not new or particularly exciting, you’ll have much to do in Hidden City: Mystery of Shadows. Solve lots of mysterious phenomena, bring to completion the dangerous quests, explore dungeons, fight monsters, look for the amulets, find clues, gather evidence, confront a cult, and get support from friends while progressing through the gameplay. Delivering this cursed city of the terrible evil and solving such a supernatural case is your essential mission.
The mini-games aren’t challenging enough to keep you engaged for a long time. Plus, they drain your energy meter. Such energy system is quite restrictive, and every time you search through a scene, your energy decreases. That’s why you can only play for a limited period of time, especially at first, which may be irritating. The energy level grows to a particular amount which is too little considering how much the hidden object scenes and mini-games cost.
Also, you won’t have much time to look for new items. It’s even harder when you don’t know what they look like. After the time runs out, you have to wait or spend real money.
The controls are pretty simple. You have to tap the objects you find, tap the buildings to enter them, tap the icons on the left to view your quests, and so on. Just use your fingers and device. Plus, the tutorial at the beginning of the game is detailed and comprehensive.
The only thing that may bother you is that some of the items are tiny and the areas are a little dark. It adds to the difficulty when there’s only a lighter to illuminate specific areas.
Replay Value 4/5
It’s easy to become addicted to this game because there is a lot to do. Here are some of the opportunities:
- explore 30 locations and complete more than 2300 quests;
- meet new personages and monsters;
- play with friends;
- enjoy the mini-games and timely updates;
- piece together 322 collections.
More bonuses are available via numerous in-game purchases.
It’s the main issue of the game. Hidden City: Mystery of Shadows is full of in-game purchases, and it’s nearly impossible to finish the game without spending a penny. You’ll feel forced to buy stacks, purses, chests, trunks of rubies, a handful of coins, and other items using real money. You’ll constantly see super deals and special offers trying to take more money from you.
Most of the aspects of the game involve spending. There’s a daily reward system which reduces the pain of this restriction, but it doesn’t help a lot.
Overall, the game’s concept is good, and it will be entertaining for the hidden object gaming fans. The gameplay keeps Hidden City indistinctly interesting, and the familiar satisfaction to level-up may keep you returning for more.
The biggest drawback of the game is its reliance upon encouraging you to spend real money. Much money. The game is not for you if you’re the kind of player who never spends a penny on mobile games.
Hidden City: Mystery of Shadows features impressive sights and a neat concept. But the number of in-game purchases you have to make to succeed is irritating and makes you want to delete the game from your device.
Pros : Spectacular graphics;
Free to download;
Lots of locations, collections, and quests.
Cons : Limited time to look for the items;
Too much ingame purchases;
Dark areas and tiny objects;
Not too engaging storyline.
