Criminal Case: Unleash Your Inner Detective

Criminal Case is a hidden object game where the player takes the role of a rookie cop who is investigating crime scenes throughout the city; the aim of the game is to find all the items to complete each case. There are over 140 different cases to complete across several cities and each case contains some real-time sequences for autopsies.

Graphics 8/10

Graphically, the game looks amazing. It uses a cartoon style and features detailed crime scenes that stand out from other games in the genre. Hidden object games are not known for including blood, gore or potentially disturbing items and content; Criminal Case on the other hand, does not shy away from this and embraces it fully. It makes the game feel a lot more 'adult' than some other detective games in this genre. There is no real pay to win in Criminal Case; players can pay to bypass the annoyance of waiting for energy to replenish but that's it. The game also lacks intrusive advertisements which is great and provides players with a nice gaming experience. There is some slight competitive nature to the game with the addition of a leadership board for each crime scene; it ranks every player on the friends-list against each other in accordance with their final score. It doesn't add much to the game and it isn't necessary to compete against other players. Players without anyone on their friend's list will be compared to AI scores for each case. Gameplay 7/10

Criminal Case uses a police theme and as a result, the game has a much darker atmosphere than most of the genre. It was first released in 2012 as a Facebook game and it is also available for iOS and Android mobile devices; the transition from Facebook to the mobile game has not damaged the gameplay. There is a simple plot in Criminal Case; the player takes the role of a rookie cop who has just joined the force. The aim of the game is to complete whatever case is assigned to the player by searching for clues at crime scenes and completing some other sequences such as autopsies. As the game progresses, the player becomes more experienced and moves up the chain to better cities in new locations. After completing a short tutorial level about the game, the player is able to customize their own character. Only a few options are available with only 3 modifiable aspects and 3 options for each. Though this is extremely limited, the player will be referred to as that character throughout the game. The game is focused on the hidden object sequences which follow the standard gameplay seen in this genre; players need to study the crime scene placed in front of them to find the items listed on the screen. The faster and more accurately the player clicks them, the more points they receive which go towards their Star count for that crime scene. If the player takes too long to find the last item it will begin to 'wiggle' until the player taps it.

Controls 7/10

Stars are an important currency in the game and are used when performing different sequences such as analyzing evidence or performing autopsies. While these other sequences are short and don't require much player interaction, they are needed to progress through the game and to complete the case. If the player doesn't have enough Stars then they need to replay the hidden object crime scene until they've earned enough Stars. Most of these other sequences use a real-time wait timer where the player just needs to wait for the action to finish; it's possible to pay to skip these long waiting sequences to progress through the game faster. There are some short puzzle mini-games to complete in-between the different crime scenes; these short puzzles vary and include matching the right pieces of information together in various ways. Clues found at the crime scenes need to be investigated properly by completing the mini-games which require a certain number of stars. Almost all actions in the game require energy; the amount of energy the player can hold at once is limited but increased over time. Actions require a large amount of energy which can be recovered over time, by leveling up or by purchasing it. Energy is the most important thing in the game and is necessary to complete any actions or to play the main hidden object sequences; most of those sequences cost 20 energy making them fairly expensive. Due to this feature, the game can only be played for a short period of time before the player needs to wait until they've regained enough of it.

Replay Value 5/10

Like with other Facebook created games, it's possible to gain a large amount of energy by sharing a post about the game through the social platform. There is a social aspect to the game where players can add friends to take with them to crime scenes; taking another player or AI character to the crime scene provides a small points boost in accordance with the companions skill level. However, the other character does not actually interact with the game outside of this. While the game offers players the chance to bypass through certain points of the game using real money, it doesn't allow the player to purchase Stars. The only way to obtain Stars is to play through the hidden object sequences at the crime scenes; it is still possible to purchase energy and to increase the energy bar for several days.

Verdict

Criminal Case is a great hidden object game; it features a lot of content which is broken up into different cases with various other sequences to provide some other gameplay. The game is held back by the annoyance of energy and wait timers which are expected feature in this genre; it also has a weak plot and characters which never really develop. Despite the issues with the game, it features solid and interesting gameplay with an amazing dark atmosphere that makes it stand out from the crowd.
