Riverman Media, who is well known for its weird game Pizza Vs. Skeleton and The Executive has released a new project for iPhone and iPad with an also strange name — MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL.
MUL.MASH is the 2D game with a hand animation and various features like enemies, boss battles, nice tunes to listen, special abilities and more.
The author’s idea is that you go back to seven thousand years ago and appear underwater of the ocean which is full of, for some reasons, holographic crabs, clams, deep-sea fishes and other beautiful things worth to see.
You suddenly find yourself in the vibrant underwater environment and have to destroy enemies before they reach the top of the screen. Your primary toolset is the two paddles on both screen sides which help you to keep a ball passing back and forth between them.
You’ll see an endless stream of underwater enemies that are passively crawling up from the bottom hoping to reach, apparently, the surface. Your goal is to hit them with the ball and receive some coins for that. There are different kinds of paddles available as you progress through the levels. It provides you with opportunities for arrow shooting, health boosts and making guiding lines for an accurate sight against your powerful enemies.
The graphics is more than just pretty. This is a crisp-looking game that's pleasant for the eyes. All those crazy stylish visuals and trippy music contribute to the feel of the game’s underwater theme. You’ll definitely experience being in the mysterious deep-sea world.
The enemy designs are fantastic. It doesn’t mean that you will be scared to death and lose all your desire to play. More likely, you will become speechless, when a giant crab scurries across the title screen or a luminescent sea urchin emerges from the bottom.
MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL is broadly created on the Pong’s concept. But, unlike Pong, MUL.MASH has various enemies, additional balls, obstacles, power-ups, different kinds of paddles, boss fights and more.
In this game, you practically control two paddles at once, one on each side of the screen. Your enemies slowly rise from the bottom of the screen and you hit the ball back and forth between them, trying not to lose it. It’s not good to lose all balls, but it isn't terrible. Just wait a few seconds for it and you’ll get them from your left paddle.
But when your enemies get to the surface, you lose some of your health points. In the case when you don’t have any, the game is over and as in true roguelike style, you have to start all over again from the first level.
There is a good thing about it. When you die in the game, you’ll keep your total score for unlocking new paddles. Each of them has own particular attributes that you can also switch out between levels. These paddles can do things like restore health, increase your ball speed, shoot projectiles and other. So if you find one paddle works best for a particular situation, like if you're low on health, you can swap in the healing paddle.
Despite this game’s simplicity, aiming to shoot the enemies is pretty hard itself. Also, your paddles and balls have “hit counters” that count how many times the ball and enemies were hit. You should better keep an eye on them because some paddles can activate powerful abilities after they hit the ball several times. Accordingly, each ball can split into two balls after they hit enemies ten times.
In sum, the game is easy to learn and paced very well, slowly introducing new groups of enemies while bringing back old ones to keep you guessing.
As it turned out, applying roguelike mechanics to Pong is pretty nice idea. MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL's use of Pong mechanics makes it one of the best action-oriented roguelikes on mobile. The game gets appropriately overwhelming and challenging while maintaining a simple control scheme that doesn't rely on virtual buttons or other problematic mobile control systems.
Regarding the game’s managing: the touch control will help you out with tough angles that you need to hit; you can also choose a virtual analog of a regular joystick that will still do its job, but it’s more expediently to control this game with your finger. You can press on the screen (then the paddle will follow every move) or pick the swiping, which uses an offset control scheme and is perfect for playing on iPad. Also, you can set thumb guides to be on.
Replay Value 3.5/5
Picking the right paddles, activating their abilities at the right time and managing multiple balls become increasingly important strategies the further you get into MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL. Combining this with increasingly crazy enemies that can eat your balls or turn invisible makes MUL.MASH feel extremely challenging and overwhelming. So it can fascinate and keep you entertained for a lot of hours.
MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL is different from other games of its genre because it doesn’t have any ads. It’s hard to believe, but you will not get sucked into buying more stuff later. The whole game is available for you for one price with all updates for a continuous period of time.
Riverman knows how to make games that feel like they should be preinstalled on every iOS device. MUL.MASH.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL is no exception. So do not think to skip this game due to its strange name. It will not disappoint you.
